How to Decorate Your Bedroom for Optimal Sleep

Sleep consumes one-third of your life, but how often do you think about it? Usually, we only ponder sleep when we don’t get enough, or it’s disrupted, or poor quality sleep. Don’t wait until you have sleep problems. Instead, why not consider redecorating your bedroom to optimize sleep? Check out these tips for a better night’s sleep after a few upgrades to your décor.

Adjust Your Lights

Two of the most critical factors in quality sleep are light and darkness. Natural sunlight in the morning starts your circadian clock ticking so you wake more fully, are alert all day, and have an easier time falling asleep at night. In the evening, you’ll nod off faster if your bedroom is totally dark.

If you have street lights near your window, consider blackout curtains. If you don’t have light pollution, leaving curtains open to let in morning light is the better choice. Another option is a wake-up light alarm which simulates sunrise to help you wake better. Also, skip overhead lights and TV before bed.

Breathe Better with Plants

Fresh air is healthy. We all know that. But how can you ensure the air you breathe while you sleep is ideal? Decorating your sleep space with plants is another way to freshen the air and make it healthier – all of which benefit sleep.

Spider plants, valerian, and eucalyptus are all top air-cleaning, oxygen-inducing plants. These are excellent choices to place on your bedside table and make attractive accessories as well. Consider a decorative planter in the window to block noise if you have street sounds at night.

Create a Comfortable Nest

The core of optimal sleep is a well-made mattress that’s a fit for your needs. When redecorating your bedroom, don’t skimp on this important piece of furniture. It’s the one you’ll use more than anything else in your house. If you’re not on a comfy sleep surface, you won’t get your best night’s sleep.

Think of your bed as your sleep nest. Layer high-quality sheets (bamboo and organic cotton can wick moisture) with a breathable, seasonally-appropriate blanket. Organic wool cools in summer and warms in winter. Be sure your pillows are in good condition and a match for your sleep preferences.

Keep Cool with Circulating Air

Most of us spend 90% of our time indoors, so we breathe air that’s recycled and vented through HVAC systems. This isn’t ideal. When looking at décor for your bedroom, consider how you can improve air circulation. A state-of-the-art ceiling fan can circulate air for comfort.

If you’re revamping your windows, look for ones that are easy to open and screened to keep out bugs so that you can have fresh air without creepy crawlies. Circulating air can keep you cooler which contributes to better sleep, along with darkness, and quiet.

Other Tips for Better Sleep

In addition to decorating and accessorizing with good sleep in mind, be sure to establish good habits. Going to bed and waking the same time each day helps program your body to sleep better. Establish a bedtime routine to help gear down for sleep.

You might want to take a hot bath or shower an hour or so before bed and then read a paper book or magazine instead of TV or digital devices so that you don’t expose yourself to blue-light which can make it harder to fall asleep.
